Chia are tiny black seeds from the plant Salvia hispanica, which is related to mint (but not minty). As a health-food staple for decades, you probably know that these low-calorie powerhouses are packed with protein and fiber; delicious in smoothies; tasty in bread; and delightfully crunchy on your favorite salad. At Sideaway, we also appreciate the important stuff: The word “Chia” is fun to say. And it reminds us of those weird little “pets” popularized in the 1970s.
